[Objective] :To study the effect of hydroxycamptothecine (HCPT) on the morphological changes .proliferation of rabbit lens epithelial cells (RLECs) in vitro and to evaluate the drugs used for posterior capsular opacification( PCO) after cataract extract .Methods] :1 RLECs were cultured in vitro first and then HCPT was added to the rabbit lens epithelial cells of second or third passage. We observed cells morphological changes with light microscope and electron microscope. . 2 HCPT of different concentrations was added to the rabbit lens epithelial cells of second or third passage. The effect of HCPT on the proliferation was observed.[Results] :1 HCPT could significantly affect the forms of RLECs. Apoptosis was observed with electron microscope.2 HCPT could inhibit the proliferation of RLECs and the number of cells with apoptosis was increased with the increase of the HCPT concentrations and the longing of time.(Conclusions] :HCPT can induce apoptosis of rabbit lens epithelial cells cultured in vitro. The number of cells with apoptosis was increased with the increase of the HCPT concentrations and the longing of time.HCPT might be a candidate to prevent the posterior capsular opacification.
