IntroductionNow, cancer has become a common disease that threats population health and life. Occupational use of pesticides has been thought as carcinogen by International Agency for Research on Cancer. Some population researches indicated that the incidence or mortality of cancer associated with pesticides exposure, but few of them are in general population. 80% of population live in agricultural area in China. China was the second pesticides production country in 1998 and the a-mount of pesticides used is about 500,000 -600,000 tons every year, 80% of which goes directly into environment. Environmental pesticides could be absorbed by people through air, water, soil and food chain. Human body can accumulate high level pesticides by continuously exposed and some studies supposed that pesticides could even affect infant by lactation, so that the cancer risk of population in agriculture area is higher than common population in other areas if the cancer is really caused by pesticides. The purpose of our study is to confirm whether cancer morbidity or mortality associates with environmental pesticide exposure in agricultural area.MaterialsThere is total number of 8,043,198 from 1998 to 2000 in Shenyang agricultural area, including districts of Sujiatun, Dongling, Yu-hong, Xinchengzi and counties of Liaozhong, Xinmin. The numbers of male and female are 4,063,087 and 3,980,111, respectively. Total 3,602(male/female; 1,979/1,623) new cancer cases occured and 5,206(male/female; 3,188/2,018) died of cancer at the same period. During 1990 -2000 the mean of cultivated land is about 409,009 hectare (the range is from 39,145 of Sujiatun to 148,661 of Xinmin) and 1,889,485 kilogram of all kinds of pesticides (the range is from 200,478 of Sujiatun to 669,192 of Xinmin) are used every year in study area. The mean of pesticides use density is 4.62 kilogram/hectare , the range is from 3. 26 of Liaozhong to 6. 39 of Yuhong.MethodsData of morbidity and mortality of sex, site - specific cancer ( nasopharynx, esophagus, stomach, colon - rectum - anus, liver, lung, bladder, leukemia as well as breast and cervix in female) were obtained from routine Annual Cancer Report in CDC of Shenyang, China. Data of class - specific pesticides use and the area of cultivated land in agricultural area are collected from Agricultural Survey Division of Shenyang Statistical Bureau. Regarding class - specific pesticides use density as independent variable, sex, site - specific cancer morbidity or mortality as dependent variable, respectively, analyze the relation of correlation and simple regression between cancer morbidityor mortality and pesticides use density by the SPSS statistical program, version 10.0. Significant level is P<0.05 in two -tails.ResultsThe significant positive correlation is observed between pesticides and morbidity and mortality of carcinoma of esophagus, respectively. Correlation coefficients both are 0. 829. The significant positive correlation is also observed between herbicides and morbidity and mortality of stomach cancer, respectively. Correlation coefficients both are 0. 943. Both morbidity and mortality of esophagus ( Correlation coefficients are 0. 886 and 0. 829, respectively) and stomach cancer (0. 943 and 0.943, respectively) in male are significant relative to pesticides. The significant correlations are also noted between herbicide and morbidity or mortality of stomach (0.943 and 1.000, respectively) and lung cancer (0.943 and 0.943, respectively) in female. A-mong above significant correlation relations, morbidity and mortality of stomach cancer have significant regression with herbicides. The linear equations are y = -3.446 +3. 854x(P <0.01) and y = -8.772+7. 900x(P <0. 01) , respectively. Coefficient of determinations are 0. 946 and 0. 917, respectively. Morbidity and mortality of lung cancer in female have significant regression with herbicides. The linear equations are y = -2.413 +4. 897x(P <0. 01) and y = -20.004+18. 926x(P < 0. 01) , respectively. Coefficient of deter...
