OBJECTIVE: Recently vascular dementia(VD) has caused increasingly important medical and social problems as the proportion of the elderly increases in the population. Many studies about VD use acute cerebral ischemic animal models, but few were carried with chronic cerebral ischemic animal models, and little was studied about traditional Chinese medicine with a view of prevention and cure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 100 Sprague-Dawley rats(lO weeks of age) were divided into nine groups: normal group, model group, preoperative and postoperative groups with high, medial and low doses of FuCongLing(FCL) and Hydergine group. Except normal group, bilateral carotid common arteries of other rats were permanently double ligated(BCAL), and respectively medicated with FCL and Hydergin suspension by gavage. In order to investigate the effects of Chinese medicinal herbs on rats brain damage and reaction after BCAL, rats were evaluated by spatial memory acquisition using a variation of the Morris Water Maze test, determined regional cerebral blood flow(rCBF) by Laser Doppler, hemorheology and serum nitric oxide of rats were also measured.
