Paeonia lactiflora Pall., as one of the famous traditional flowers in China, is not only widely used as ornamental ones, but also as officinal ones. In order to find out the further medical use of the ornamental Paeonia lactiflora,we take'Da Fugui','Fen Yunu','Qihua Lushuang','Zhu Shapan'as control samples,the contents of main compounds such as paeoniflorin,albiflorin,gallic acid,catechin,ferulic acid and p-hydroxy benzoacid acid were analyzed here.At the same time, the dynamic change of paeoniflorin content in roots of Paeonia lactiflora in different ages,harvest times and root thickness were detected.Besides the contents of Ca,Cu,K,Mg,Mn,Zn and starch, soluble protein, crude fat, crude fiber also be determined. The main conclusions are as follows:1. By HPLC method, the dynamic change of paeoniflorin and albiflorin contents in roots of'Da Fugui','Fen Yunu','Qihua Lushuang','Zhu Shapan'were detected.The results showed that during the observation period, the content of paeoniflorin was'low - high–low'.But it's still higher than the standard content which was stipulated by Pharmacopoeia of China(2005). The content of albiflorin in 4 samples was between 0.22% and 0.25%. Paeoniflorin and albiflorin content of different varieties there were some differences:'Fen Yunu'>'Zhu Shapan'>'Qihua Lushuang'>'Da Fugui'.2. Screening of the best harvesting time ,the conclusion is that the best cultivation period of medicinal Paeonia lactiflora was 5 years,and the best harvesting time of Paeonia.lactiflora was the late September,because both paeoniflorin content and the drying rate were at high level.1)According to the content of paeoniflorin and the quality of the roots,we got that if the root is more than 5 years old,then the older of the root the smaller of the content of paeoniflorin. The older of the Paeonia lactiflora the higher of the root yield, but, when the cultivation period of five years or more,the qulity of the root is dropped.So, the best growth period of medicinal peony were 4 or 5 years.2) To ensure both ornamental and medicinal uses of Paeonia.lactiflor. We determine the time of this study from late July to the end of October. The results showed that from July to October, the content of paeoniflorin was'low - high–low'.Besides, the drying rate in late September also at a high level.In addition, the content of paeoniflorin in different thickness of the roots were compared. Judging from the result, the content of paeoniflorin did not increase as the diameter of the enlargement of the root. On the contrary, the more fine roots were higher paeoniflorin level.3. By HPLC method, the dynamic change of gallic acid,catechin,ferulic acid and p-hydroxy benzoacid in the roots were detected. Data showed that the contents of ferulic acid, p-hydroxy benzoic acid and gallic acid in'Fen Yunu'collected in September are the highest. The content of catechin of'Zhu Shapan'reached 0.096%, which was higher than other 3 samples. Compared with four samples no matter which components'Da Fugui'always at the lowest level.4. Seven kinds of mineral elements and mainly nutrients in four varieties of peony root were detected.(1) The absorbance of Zn,Cu,Ca,Mg,K,Fe and Mn in the Sample are determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer, and calculate the content. Where K,Ca,Fe,Mg content is relatively high, K,Ca content in the range of 0.3%-0.5%, Fe,Mn content in the 0.1% or so. K have prominent effects in maintaining cardiac function and involving in metabolism and lowering blood pressure;Ca is the most likely lack of nutrients in the diet of our people's nutrients; Fe is the "building blocks" of human development; Mn is a recognized tumor suppressor from the elements.(2) Starch, soluble protein, crude fat, crude fiber content in the 4 kinds of peony root was determined by using the appropriate method of GB. In which, little difference in soluble protein content, the content percentage is about 7% -9%. Crude fat content in the peony root is low, the highest content of the"Qihua Lushuang"is 0.424%, and the lowest content of the"Fen Yvnu"is 0.337%. Four varieties of crude fiber content in the root is about 10%, the lowest content is"Qihua Lushuang"that 6.89%, the highest content is"Fen Yvnu"that 12.52%, which was higher than the other plants that in order to harvest the rhizome, such as yams. Also, the starch content of peony root is abundantly, up to 20% -30%.These results suggested that the peony research, besides ornamental and medicinal, can also try to other aspects of the development and utilization such as health food research and development.
