Background & Objective:Recent studies show the complex influence of different BMI on health related quality of life.Especially overweight had positive effect on mental domains of HRQoL. Therefore, there must be some other factors impact the relationship between BMI and HRQoL.Gentleness type which had a marked impact on HRQoL was exploratively introduced to this study. This study draws on the research methods for the moderator variables and the moderating effect, to research whether gentleness type plays a role as moderator between BMI and HRQoLMethods:The design of this research is cross-sectional study.l 114 cases are collected from the Affiliated Hospital of Anhui University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Zhuhai Hospital of Guangdong province Chinese Medicine Hospital. (1) Study on gentleness type score and HRQoL score of different BMI populations. (2) Using correlation analysis to explore the relationship between BMI, gentleness type scores and SF-36 scores. (3) First, the BMI and gentleness type score respectively minus their mean, then generating interactive term " BMI X gentleness type".Using stratification regression analysis, considering physical component, mental component and each dimension score of SF-36 as the dependent variable Y. Age, sex, marital status, education levels, smoking preference, drinking preference, exercise levels, sleep habits and other factors were included in the regression equation as independent variables in the first step.BMI was included in the regression equation in the second step.Gentleness type score was included in the regression equation in the third step. "BMI × gentleness" was included in the regression equation in the fourth step,in order to study the influence of independent variables and interaction terms on HRQoL. (4)Considering gentleness type score as grouping variables to investigate whether gentleness type plays a role as moderator between BMI and HRQoL.Results:(1) PCS,MCS,GH, VT, SF, RE and MH scores of overweight people were significantly higher than those of normal weight people (p<0.05). PCS,MCS, GH, VT, RE and MH scores of overweight people were also significantly higher than those of under weight people (p<0.05). MCS, RE and MH scores of obese people were significantly higher than those of normal weight people (p<0.05). MH scores of obese people were significantly higher than those of under weight people (p<0.05). (2) Gentleness type scores of overweight people were significantly higher than those of normal people (p<0.05) and underweight weight people (p<0.05). Gentleness type scores of obese people were also significantly higher than those of normal people (p<0.05) and underweight weight people (p<0.05). (3) Simple correlation analysis showed that, BMI and PCS (r=0.095, p=0.001), BMI and RP (r=0.062, p =0.037), BMI and BP (r=0.063, p=0.036), BMI and GH (r=0.122, p<0.001) were significantly correlated. BMI and MCS (r=0.204, P<0.001), BMI and VT (r=0.167, p<0.001), BMI and SF (r=0.129, p<0.001), BMI and RE (r=0.174,P<0.001), BMI and MH (r=0.199, p<0.001) were also significantly correlated. BMI and gentleness type score were significantly correlated (r=0.201, p<0.001). Gentleness type score and PCS、MCS and its eight dimensions were significantly correlated (0.308<r<0.669, p<0.001). (4) The results of hierarchical regression showed that the impact of interaction terms on PF dimension of quality of life was statistically significant (b’= 0.087, p=0.002). Regression coefficients of interaction terms between gentleness type and BMI were not that significant for PCS (b’=0.019, p=0.430),RP (b’ = 0.008, p=0.778),BP (b’=0.010, p=0.715),GH (b’=0.019, p=0.433) and MCS (b’=0.023, p=0.306),VT (b’=0.004, p=0.847),SF (b’=0.008, p=0.763), RE (b’=-0.043, p=0.123),MH (b’=-0.003, p=0.910) domains of quality of life. The R2 of regression equation changed relatively small after controlling BMI in second step regression. The R2 of regression equation changed a lot after controlling gentleness type score in third step regression. It suggested gentleness type score has more effect than BMI on HRQoL.After controlling the level of gentleness type score in third step regression, the regression relationships between BMI, PCS, MCS and its eight dimensions changed from positive to negative, or the positive regression relationship decreased, negative regression relationship increased,it suggested gentleness type may have medium effect on relationships between BMI and HRQoL. (5)The results of grouping regression showed that the three regression lines were not parallel only when the PF dimension was the dependent variable (F=5.967, p=0.003).So the moderating effect of gentleness type between BMI and PF component of quality of life was statistically significant. High and medium gentleness type score groups was combined and then compare with low gentleness type score group. The results of grouping regression showed that the two regression lines were not parallel (F=4.477, p=0.035). So the moderating effect of gentleness type between BMI and RE component of quality of life was statistically significant. Conclusion:BMI has a less effect on HRQoL than gentleness type. The moderating effect of gentleness type between BMI and PF or RE was statistically significant. Gentleness type plays a medium role on relationship between BMI and HRQoL. Therefore, nursing constitution, promoting yin and yang to peace, may have a more important value for improving the quality of life than weight management.
