With the development of industry, especially the petroleum and petrochemical industry, liquid storage tanks are used more and more extensively. In case the tanks are damaged subjected to earthquake, it can result in heavy economic losses and serious second disaster. So it is very important to analyze and research the seismic response of the tanks, explore their coupling vibration mechanism, predict the dynamic response characteristics of the tanks under earthquake load, which provide some useful references to the aseismic design theory and the studies on the seismic behavior of the tanks. This paper analyzes the seismic response of the liquid storage tank based on the finite element method and the analytical methods, so as to obtain some useful rules of the seismic response of the tanks and the differences between the results solved by the two different methods. The main works of this paper are given as follows:1. The research development of fluid-structure interaction and the research status of seismic research of large liquid storage tank are expounded. And then some basic theories of the mechanics of fluid-structure interaction are introduced.2. Based on the potential flow theory, the potential-based elements and the shell elements are used to simulate the liquid and the tank, respectively. Using the displacement-potential finite element method formulas, the seismic response procedures of the liquid storage tank based on the ADINA program are given. Some useful conclusions of the tanks under the earthquake load can be drawn through examples.3. The procedures of the seismic response of the tanks using analytical methods, including Housner method and velocity potential description method are introduced. The results obtained using the analytical methods and ADINA program are compared through examples.
