The Bund in shanghai is the biggest, best preserved modern building cluster in the East Asia. Since shanghai was forced to open up in 1843, the buildings on the bund have undergone three phrases of developments, and till the 1920s and 1930s, the architecture styles on the bund has gained their special urban characteristics. These buildings are of important cultural and historic values. After the foundation of the PRC in 1949, the Bund went through two times of functional shifts and large scale of infrastructure alternations, and particularly in the 1990s, the surging of Lu Jia Zui financial trade zone has brought the Bund new functional changes.The paper selects three buildings: the bund three, bund nine, bund eighteen, that exemplify the reconstruction and reuse of the historic structures to analysis. In this paper, through the combination of theory and practice, we are trying to summarize and analysis the ideas and technologies used in the reconstruction of these buildings. Thus based on the case studies of these three buildings, we want to summarize the feasible approaches that can be used in the protection and reuse of the buildings on the bund and provide some ideas and methods for the cities that are undergoing massive old urban reconstruction.
