Bund 3,built in 1916, located in The Bund, is an outstanding historical building. The design of structural renovation and strengthening for an outstanding historical building is more difficult than that of conventional construction because an outstanding historical building may have a long history, various structural styles, a complicated situation, and some places need to be protected. Even after the completion of structure reinforcement, its structural performance is different form that of conventional construction. This paper is devoted to the seismic design research of structural renovation and strengthening of Bund 3, and attempts to find a more reliable design method.In this paper, the present situation of the design of structural renovation and strengthening for an outstanding historical building is presented, the difficult points, the design methods, the reinforcement techniques are generalized, particularities and problems of design is introduced.Performance-based seismic design (PBSD) is the development tendency of seismic design. Pushover analysis is the key means to carry out PBSD. Pushover analysis includes obtaining the capability curve, determining target displacement, and analyzing the results. The thought of PBSD was manifested in Pushover analysis. To be used in strengthening seismic design of Bund 3, Pushover analysis is introduced.Measurement and analysis is the base of structural renovation and strengthening. The situation before strengthen of Bund 3 is introduced and analyzed.The design of structural renovation and strengthening base on current code of Bund 3 is introduced. The design attaches importance to protection outstanding historical building, and try to attain the maximization of building function by less strengthening. Methods such as reducing loading, strengthening joints, setting braces are use to attain building function and to reinforce structureTo further understand the seismic performance of the structure, and to find a more reliable design method, Pushover analysis was used to analyze Bund 3. The result tells us, after strengthening the structure still exist some weak location under the elastic-plastic conditions when a strong earthquake come. It is conclude that Pushover is advantaged in considering of elastic-plastic conditions and locating a weak location.Finally, the main research conclusions were given an the study works to be developed further were pointed out.
