The demand of long-span complex space structures is blooming in China in recent years. Much innovation in the structural type is witnessed in the fast growth of space structures as well as in the construction methods. Structural engineers are required to have done enough analysis for the construction process to ensure the safety of the structures.Hoisting and temporary supports are most commonly ways used in the construction. But the traditional methods to analysis hoisting and temporary supports are more experience-based, which may not be capable enough for the new structural type. Thus a kind of new method is urged for the layout decision of hoisting and temporary support.The thesis recommended the theory of minimum strain energy, which says the total structural strain energy can be changed by the increase and decrease of constraint number. The natural selecting process obeys the direction of energy declining, or the path with least resistance, so it is possible to find the best constraint layout by the minimum strain energy of structures.The application of the energy method to the construction analysis of long-span space structures, to find the best layout of hoisting points and temporary support points, is very useful for the preparation for construction. The thesis also mentions the decision of hoisting height using satisfactory method of aim function. Similar to structure units like trusses on hoisting, they are also in constraint status on temporary supports. Divide the whole structural into several units, use the energy method to find the optimized layout respectively, then combine the unit layout to form the whole support layout. This can be called the semi-energy method for the decision of temporary layout.Considering no construction analysis oriented software for long-span space structures exists in the domestic engineering software market in China, a constructionmodule is developed upon the platform of MSTCAD, a famous domestic software for space grid structures design. This will not only enhance the software functions, but also meets the growing domestic demand for construction analysis software.
