Matrix converter is a power converter with an advanced circuit topology. It has many virtues such as simpler structure, better controllable performance, higher power factor and less harmonic pollution. Because of these advantages, it has a great future, and more and more people show great interest in it. In the thesis, the space vector modulation of MC can be synthesized by fictitious rectifier and fictitious inverter. Two space vector control strategies of MC, which combines output line voltage space vector modulation and input phase current space vector modulation, is adopted. This method meets the demand of input sinusoidal current and adjusts input displacement between positive and negative. In order to select the parameters of MC, the linear time-invariant equivalent circuit model is established by introducing the PARK transformation into the space vector modulated MC. With the circuit analysis theory, a detail analysis is given. The hardware of the DSP-based control system is constructed and the software is designed and written. The main circuit consists of nine bi-directional switches which are made up with IGBTs paralleling with diodes. The semi-natural two-step commutation is introduced to achieve security commutation of bi-directional switches. That is, preventing the switch combinations which make the input source short and ensuring at least one path which is provided to carry current at any time. This strategy can be carried out with programmable logic devices. This thesis discusses principal issues of the matrix converter such as prime principle, control strategy, current commutation, parameter selection and its applications etc. By the theoretical analysis, computer simulation and experimental investigation, some valuable experiences and significant conclusions are obtained, which found the basis of the project for the further studies.
