Laser scanning technology is widely used, different means and methods of laser scanning used for different applications. In this paper, laser scanning system at home and abroad from the research experience in project. Three-dimensional laser scanner in volume measurement for coal yard of Thermal Power Plant in-depth study and discussion. The contents of this paper is construction of a digital automation system by coal yard basded on laser measurenment system. Firstly, this paper introduce the system function, structure of digital automation system, and detailed introduce the scanning method and work principle of three-dimensional laser scanner. The existing three-dimensional methods to obtain information and summed up the classification, these methods of the strengths and shortcomings, pointing out that the problems which should be noted in this paper and what information acquisition method should be take. Subsequently, the point clouds processing arithmetic such as point identification, edge and corner feature extraction, scanning block matching and joining, surface model resconstruction and data structure was expatiated in detail respectively. The study of data communication protocol for scanner, industrial control computer, the client computer, three-dimensional scan data communication method, the introduction of computer data communication.Through the three-dimensional data processing, modeling, three-dimensional model of coal yard was structured. Unlimited division to three-dimensional model. Be produced seamless connection pentahedral with TIN net, calculation of coal yard volume by calculus equation.
