In recent years, with the rapid development of urban construction, urban heat island has become increasingly apparent. Using GIS and remote sensing technology to study heat island phenomenon increasingly reflects its value. In addition, the remote sensing image data has the characteristic of high time and high spatial resolution, which can meet the urgent need of monitoring the heat island effect dynamically and meticulously. Therefore, using GIS and RS technology to monitor the distribution of urban heat island has a very important application value, which can further enhance the level of monitoring and alleviate the negative impact of the heat island effect on urban climate, industrial and agricultural production and residents in all aspects of life.Considering that the urban heat island effect brings tremendous impact of the urban ecology and the national economy, this paper focus on the heat island effect problem, studies the following aspects of content, and draws the preliminary conclusions: (1) Using EOS / MODIS satellite data, resources satellite TM data, ground-based data and statistical data, it has researched on a set of methods which can monitor and evaluate the thermal environment in Shanghai City. (2) Using EOS / MODIS satellite thermal infrared data and the synchronous or quasi-synchronous data of ground-based automatic weather station, it has inversed the temperature quantitatively and assessed the status of the entire summer heat island effect in Shanghai for three consecutive years. At the same time, using GIS to extract and analyze the ground medium of the different temperature range in Shanghai in summer, it has worked out that in clear weather conditions, with the exception of the man-made impact, the formation and distribution of the Shanghai urban heat island mostly is closely related to medium of the surface and the change of city pattern. (3) By classifying and interpreting the surface media of typical urban residential area, and researching on the surface medium and ground temperature distribution quantitatively, it has worked out that the ratios of ground medium and temperature distribution have the following relationship: the proportion of vegetation is a negative correlation with the temperature; the proportion of construction is positively correlated with temperature. At the same time, extracting the green information of samples area, as well as analyzing the heat status of the district and the green spatially, it draws the conclusion that the green area of the district has the effect on the strength of the heat island effect. That provides a scientific basis on solving the problem of heat island effect of urban residential area, as well as providing an important basic decision and strong scientific support for the ecological environment of the city construction.
