The Hexi Corridor is rich in the resources of power and lands and is the important base of colored metal, steel, oil, grain, vegetable and spaceflight of the state. However, the Hexi Corridor , located in the inland desert range, is lack of the water and its ecosystem is weak. In recent years, with the fast development of the economy and because of the unsuitable use of the water and soil resources, the eco-system is degraded, affecting the sustainable economic and social development of Hexi Corridor. By looking up many documents related to the eco-system of Hexi Corridor, investigating in the field and discussing with consultants, technicians and local residents, the positive results were gained as following:1. The main problems about the eco-system degradation of Hexi Corridor were described: i) the eco-system degradation of the forest and grasslands ;ii) over-utilization of water resources;iii) aggravation of oasis desertification; iv) aggravation of lands'saline-alkali soil; v) aggravation of environmental pollution.2. The reasons of eco-system degradation of Hexi Corridor were: i) global warming; ii) bad natural conditions; iii) unsuitable use of natural resources by modern.3. The experiences of eco-system rehabilitation and construction of Hexi Corridor were summed up and the thoughts and principles for eco-system rehabilitation of Hexi Corridor were put forward.4.According to the special types of natural, geographic and ecological conditions of Hexi Corridor, the area of eco-system rehabilitation and construction was divided into three types: desertification area with wind erosion, desertification area with water erosion and desertification with salinity. The strategies for ecological rehabilitation and re-building of each feature was put forward: three inland rivers were divided, included Shiyang River, Heihe River and Shulehe River.5.The suggestions about the scientific and technical support for the eco-system rehabilitation and re-building of Hexi Corridor were put forward: i) formulation of rational and scientific pland and design for eco-system rehabilitation and re-building; ii) active extension of the advanced technologies; iii) emphasis on technical research for the eco-system rehabilitation and re-building; iv) support for institutional construction; v) establishment of monitoring system for ecosystem and evaluation system for the project effect; vi) development of the international cooperation for getting more international assistance.6. The major engineering measures for eco-system rehabilitation of Hexi Corridor were put forward: high-efficiency water-saving eco-agriculture; land conversion into afforestation and folder grass; natural forest protection and vegetation rehabilitation engineering in Qilian Mountain, three-north shelterbelt protection program, construction of nature reserve for wetlands in desertification area, conservation eco-agriculture; rural energy program, demonstration for sands-industry development program, etc.7. The main policies and measures of the eco-system rehabilitation and re-building of Hexi Corridor were put forward: i) unified management of the water resources; ii) development of the water-saving industry; iii) control of population increase; iv) scientific and technical innovation ; v) compensation of ecological benefits; vi) establishment and improvement of the laws and regulations system; vii) development of environmental building input; viii) establishment of ecological environment monitoring system ;ix) development of the organization.The eco-system rehabilitation and re-building of Hexi Corridor affects not only the ecological security and economic development of Hexi Corridor, but also the environmental quality of northwest and north of China. At present, four plans should be worked out as quickly as possible, which include Plan for the General Management of Shiyang Drainage Basin, Plan for Desertification and Saline-Alkali Soil Combat of Hexi Corridor, Plan for General Management of Glacier and Ecological Environment of Qilian Mountain and Plan for the Management of Ecological Environment of Dunhuang and Protection of Cultural Relic of Mogao Caves. The Eco-System Rehabilitation and Re-Building Engineering of Hexi Corridor should be involved in the plans which mentioned above and be reported to the State Council for authorizion and should be included in the eleventh five-year plan of Gansu so that there are more input from national level and social assistance to speed up the construction and improve the harmonious scoical-economic development of the Hexi Corridor.
