Photochromism is defined as a reversible phototransformation of a chemical species between two forms having different absorption spectra, however, photochromism was not discovered until the end of nineteenth century. Recently, photochromism have attracted more and more attention and interest of chemists due to their potential application prospects in the area of optical information storage, ophthalmic glasses, electronic display systems and optical switches.Pyrans and spirooxa-zines are two very important classes of photochromic compounds, which have attracted intense research due to their superior photochromic properties, such as excellent resistance to fatigue. This thesis mainly consists of three parts:In the first part, a brief review of photochromism is provided, including the recent development of photochromic Compounds in organic synthesis, materials' domains and the introduction of their uses. The second part focus on the synthesis of pyrans and the investigation of their photochromic properties and two-dimensional fluorescent spectroscopy, including three new compounds that have not yet been reported, which were synthesized by Stobbe condensation, followed by intramolecular Friedel-Crafts acylation ,hydrolysis, esterification, and addition reaction. The result Shows that their solutions are characterized by good photochromic property, and their solutions can transform to red-brown, pink from transparence after sunshine irradiation, and the fading speed of Photo 4-6 is quicker than those of Photo 3-6, Photo 3-7.In the third part, Op which is a kind of Spirooxa-zines is synthesized. We optimize the reaction conditions and do the amplifying experiment in the lab, the photochromic properties and. two-dimensional fluorescent spectroscopy are also investigated. The result shows that Op solution can transform quickly to green from transparence after sunshine irradiation, and the polarity of solvent have no effect on theλmax of it's colored form. Finally some spectral data and references are listed.
