| The oil pollution took great pressure to the ocean and its entironment, and affected industrial production and daily life in coast areas. As oil pollution happened stochastically, it is difficult to be predicted. How to detect the location where oil pollution occurred, oil species and the amount are the main contents of this study. Remote sensing is a quite effective method because the information of the oil on the sea surface and its surroundings are received by sensors at the same time; their characteristics are represented by the difference of image data.As satellite remote sensing becomes more effective with the development of the hardware and data processing, it has great potential in the study of oil pollution due to its low price, data abundance, large coverage, and flexible data processing.tspill by using AVHRR data acquired by NOAA satellite. After considering the reflection and emission characteristics of the oil on the sea surface, we processed and analyzed the visible and thermal infrared data of NOAA/AVHRR. The information was acquired about oil spills caused by the tank of"TASMAN SAE"in Nov. 2002 near the port of Tianjin, and the accident of"ARTEAGE"happened around Dalian. The methods of image processing such as stretching of single channel, histogram equalization and color composite were used; the difference between the grey value of oil spill and its surrounding sea water was enhanced. The parameters such as the location, oil spill coverage and the amount of the oil spill were estimated on the base of the oil spill's radiation characteristics. The computer programs of IDL were written to realize the automatic segmentation of the spill and the sea water.The NOAA/AVHRR data has bright future in the application of oil spill detection as the technique of the sensor and the methods of information processing are improved, we believe that it is wise and effective to set up such system of oil spill...
