The rapid socio-economic development in Guanzhong region, Shaanxi province, since recent years has produced ever greater pressure on the local eco-environmental system. Spatial difference of resources and industries has also resulted in a lopsided regional development pattern. How to balance the socio-economic development and the environment protection has then become a challenge.Based on the analyses of ecological footprint, this thesis is attempting to get a better understanding of the regional ecological security in Guanzhong region, and contribute some suggestions to the modeling of local ecological compensasion. The main findings and conclusions of this research are as follows:(1) The interrelations of the three key concepts of this research should be understood in this way: ecological footprint analysis can offer a foundation for the study of regional ecological security and ecological compensation;the ecological compensation is an important approach to improve regional ecological security;and the ecological security is the goal of ecological compensation.(2) The differences of equivalence factor in the aspects of arable land, forest, pasture, fossil energy land, built-up areas, and water areas between Guanzhong region and the world is rather remarkable. The differences of yield factor in these aspects between Guanzhong region and the average of China is also obvious. The average production of forest and pasture in Guanzhong is lower than that of average production all of the arable land, forest, pasture, fossil energy land, built-up areas and water areas in local region.(3) The cities in Guanzhong region have generally shown a state of ecological deficit. Although the spatial differences of ecological deficit between sub-areas in theregion are not that big, the differences of ecological footprint of per ten thousands Yuan of GDP are quite. The area with the highest efficiency of resource using is XT an city, and the one with the lowest efficiency is Weinan city.(4) The pressure indices of ecological footprint of the cities in Guanzhong region have indicated a worsening tendency. The status of ecological security is on the stage of depravation. The largest pressure index is found in Yangling and the smallest on occurs in Tongchuan. The reasons of ecological insecurity is that the demand of arable land is over large, but the supply of fossil energy land, pasture and water areas is not enough.(5) The spatial pattern of ecological deficit has shown that Xincheng, Beilin, Lianhu, Baqiao, Weiyang, Yanta and Yanliang districts have ecological surplus, whereas Lintong, Chang'an, Lantian, Zhouzhi, Huxian and Gaoling districts have ecological deficit. In the constitution of ecological footprint, the proportion of arable land in all the districts is large. And the proportion of fossil energy land is only relatively large in Xincheng,Lianhu, Baqiao, Weiyang,Yanta and Yanliang districts.(6) The pattern of the regional ecological compensation might be configurated as: Xincheng, Beilin, Lianhu, Baqiao, Weiyang, Yanta and Yanliang districts should give ecological compensation to Lintong, Chang'an, Lantian, Zhouzhi, Huxian and Gaoling districts. The biggest supplier of ecological compensation should be Beilin district in amount of 190.7649 million per year, and the biggest demander of ecological compensation will be Zhouzhi county in amount of 241.4934 million per year.
