The apportionment of particulate matter in center urban ambient air of Yuxi City has been performed for the first time by academic designing, local samples collecting, laboratory analyzing and model calculating etc. .The samples of total suspended particulate matter (TSP) were collected at three sites: Municipal Environmental Monitoring Station, Daying Street, and Dongfeng Reservoir. At the same time, the samples of 5 sources were collected, such as soil dust, building material dust, coal smoke dust, steel dust and traffic dust. Sixteen elements in both sources and receptor were measured by ICP-AES (Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry). On the basis of these, the Chemical Mass Balances (CMBs) model for Yuxi City was developed. And the contribution rates of 5 sources to TSP were got through model calculating: soil dust was 40.75%, building material dust was 31.06% , coal smoke dust was 18.37%, steel dust was 8.09% and traffic dust was 1.73%. Also a multivariate receptor model called Factor Analysis (FA) has been applied to identify 5 main sources of TSP.The contribution rates of the 5 sources were roughly estimated: cement/limestone source was 52.32%, soil source was 22.74%, traffic source was 12.06%, steel source was 7.45%, coal and refuse combustion source was 3.51%.The results indicate: CMBs and FA are reliable models for sources apportionment and outcomes are in accord with what it is. According to the appointment results and pollutant characteristics of TSP, focusing on management, craftwork and precipitator devices etc., dust pollution control countermeasures for various kinds of sources have been presented respectively.
