Coal is rich in our country and it is mainly the raw material of energy and chemistry. There is a more and more requirement for the monomers of simple aromatic engineering plastics with the rapid development of these advanced materials. So there is an opportunity to develop the technology of coal's liquefaction. In this article, the research work was done to develop a method to get more aromatics from Daliuta subbituminous coal. The experiments were carried out in a 50ml micro-autoclave apparatus to investigate the effects of solvent, catalyst, temperature, reaction atmosphere, swelling time and reaction time on the liquefaction conversion, fraction yields and especially the aromatics yields. In the experiment, raw coal and swollen coal were characterized by SEM, FT-IR, Temperature-Programmed Thermogravimetry instrument and absorption-desorption scanning instrument. The results indicated that total conversion, oil and gas yields, aromatic yields were enhanced greatly. In the liquefying reaction of swollen coal, polar solvent enhanced the reaction activity. The results indicated that the physical structure of coal has been changed during the solvent swelling pretreatment. The swollen coal have a comparative liquefaction conversion at the initial NI or H: atmosphere. The liquefying effect of solvent swelling is more obviously in lower temperature than high temperature. The swollen coals' intrinsic hydrogen donating ability has been improved.
