Map is a powerful tool for recording,displaying,computing and analysing roomage relationship of geographic objects. With the development of Science of Computer and Mapping technology, traditonal paper map will be replaced by digital map for its preponderant attribute of dynamical, alternative, Super-Media intergrated, Multi-Yardstick expression and Multi-Dimension displays. Sand map for military purpose is established to redisplay actual terrain according to paper map, it is a micro-model for 3D-terrain which can present battlefield situation all moments. Contrast to practicality model, visualization of 3D-terrain becomes an emphasis and difficulty in the field of GIS and military simulation.Studies have been made in this paper for how to turn paper map to digital map, then to 3D-terrain. Theories and technologies about CG, image processing and Pattern Recognition are integrated, which be made to achieve that. Fisrtly, discussion are based on theories of Pattern Recognition, format and chatacteristic of map data, method of gathering data, technologies of image processing for scanning map. Secondly, theories and technologies of DEM data are presented. It is important that how to get DEM data and the established DEM model for 3D-terrain visualization. Finally, a 3D terrain simulation system has eatablished according to the military requirements by Visual C++ & OpenGL. In the system, someone can cruise and play for military purpose.Based on the method usded in this paper, the map data get from the scanning map can be used in most GIS softwares, such as ARC/INFO, MapInfo, ImageGIS, MAPGIS, etc, and the data-base can be established through module function of GIS softwares. 3D-terrain visualization system can be established by GIS softwares, which will be lead to establish professional and high level simulation system for military drilling. The methods of getting terrain data and the 3D-terrain visualization system have proved to be effective. It provides a new solution for getting terrain data. It can be popularized in the field of GIS and military simulation.
