Abstract/Summary:
The development of social competence skills for children with autism spectrum disorders is now widely recognized as an integral part of the educational setting. As more responsibility for this area is placed on educators, the importance of providing staff with evidence-based social competence interventions is immense. The objective of this project was to provide special educators and staff with a resource of evidence-based social competence skill interventions for children with autism spectrum disorders. Interviews were conducted with special education teachers and autism specialists, along with experts in the field of autism spectrum disorders. Based on a review of current literature on evidence-based interventions and input from professionals, a manual for special educators and staff was developed. The goal of this manual was to provide an evidence-based intervention resource to assist staff in choosing appropriate strategies to utilize in addressing social deficit IEP goals and objectives in the educational environment.;Keywords: autism spectrum disorders, social competence, intervention, evidence-based.
