PurposeThe Chinese Medicine is an important component of the Chinese culture,while the regional Chinese Medicine theories is essential to form the Chinese Medicine.The Chinese Medicine in Lingnan Region connects the general principles of the Chinese Medicine to the practical treatment of the Lingnan region.The regional medicine is developed after the long period since the connection.Min Quo is the highlighted period of the Chinese Medicine in Lingnan Region as the theories are enriched and the practice of Chinese Medicine is widely adopted,there are many famous physicians and their achievements are prominent.East meets west kicking off and the early stage of Lingnan medical and health activities developed from Qin and Han.Song,Yuan to Ming dynasties has the opportunity to meet with the new knowledge of Western Medicine.This opportunity adds fuel for the development of the Chinese Medicine in Guangdong.It is therefore an important period for research in the Chinese Medicine in Lingnan Region.Apparently,it becomes a hardcore in the research of the Chinese Medicine in Lingnan Region.Yet,the research on the medical history and literature of the traditional Chinese Medicine in Lingnan Region appears a bit scattered.There are repeated research of physicians with readily available data.The study of those physicians,with less available literatures or the data difficult to be find,would not be conducted,like Chen Ru-lai,Guo Shao-jiu,Huang Sheng-san,Chen Ying-qi,Liang Han-fen,,and Liang Zi-ju,Lu Chu-bai,Xie Ze-lin.In the history of the development of the Chinese Medicine in Lingnan Region,there are many famous physicians arising in the Region.Their medical thought would to some extent represents the distinctive characteristics of the Chinese Medicine in Lingnan Region.Their work would be a major composition of the Chinese Medicine in Lingnan Region.The research into them would therefore be one of the focus in the study of the Chinese Medicine in Lingnan Region.This research would be an in-depth study of the " Lecture Notes on the Gynecology of Traditional Chinese Medicine" of Lu Chu-bai,a famous Lingnan physician,and take reference from " Lecture Notes on the Gynecology of Traditional Chinese Medicine" of Xie Ze-lin.There are no systematic and in-depth study of the medical literatures of Lu Chu-bai as well as Xie Ze-lin.The thesis of "Research on The Lecture Notes on the Gynecology of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Lu Chu-bai,a famous Lingnan gynecological physician " would take into account of his distinctive medical thought and medical experience.This is not only a contribution to the Medical History and Literature of the Traditiona| Chinese Faculty of the University,and is also beneficial to the learning communion in the history of research of the Chinese Medicine in Lingnan Region.MethodThe basic foundation work of the includes data collection and data compilation.(1)Data collectionThe "Lecture Notes on the Gynecology of Traditional Chinese Medicine"is kept in the university library of the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine.Through the net-work searching,the relevant thesis have been identified.The books are being read with notes taken.They have also been filmed and photo-copied.(2)Data compilationThere are two versions of the "Lecture Notes on the Gynecology of Traditional Chinese Medicine" being kept university library of the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine.One is published by the Guangdong Chinese Medicine Specialist School.The another one is issued by the Guangdong Guang Han Chinese Medicine Specialist School.The content of both versions is nearly the same,with difference in emphasis of certain topics.There are two volumes of the book but now only volume 1 exists.Volume 1 begins with the general theories of gynecology,which introduces the pathology of and treatment strategy related to the menstruation,vaginal discharge,pregnancy and labour of women.It is followed by 5 chapters which include the elaboration of menstruation,amenorrhoea,vaginal discharge,pregnancy and infertility respectively.The focus of the elaborations falls on menstruation irregularity,vaginal discharge and infertility problems.The texts of the "Lecture Notes on the Gynecology of Traditional Chinese Medicine" are then type-written into computer as word doc format.The column format is changed to a row one.The traditional Chinese is converted into Simplified Chinese.The punctuation and numbering is also put into the texts.Conclusion1.Study on the Lecture Notes on the Gynecology of Traditional Chinese Medicine"The book of "Lecture Notes on the Gynecology of Traditional Chinese Medicine" by Lu Chu-bai is being kept university library of the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine.The content is intact on the whole.There are two versions which are Guangdong Guang Han Chinese Medicine Specialist School version and the Guangdong Chinese Medicine Specialist School.The content of the two versions are nearly the same,with only some differences in wording.The texts of the "Lecture Notes on the Gynecology of Traditional Chinese Medicine"by Lu Chu-bai are then type-written into computer.The column format is changed to a row one.The traditional Chinese is converted into Simplified Chinese.The punctuation and numbering is also put into the texts.The electronic version of the "Lecture Notes on the Gynecology of Traditional Chinese Medicine" by Lu Chu-bai is attached at Annex I.2.Medical thought,Medical Experience and Distinctive Medical Practice of Lu Chu-bai,a famous physician in Liangnan RegionIn the study of the lecture notes of Lu Chu-bai,it shows that he is not only a lecturer of the Chinese Medicine,but also a very experienced Chinese Medicine practitioner.Hi s medical thought,medical experience and distinctive medical practice can be summarized as(1)Place a high value on classical Chinese Medicine masterpiece and learn from the previous famous physicians.Develop his own prescriptions and own views from the basis of the classical Chinese Medicine masterpiece and share his views and modified herb formula.Lu Chu-bai is expert in "Huangd’ si Internal Classic(黄帝内经)" and"Classic on Medical problems(难经)".He introduces many quotes from these two Chinese Medicine masterpiece.He describes the physiology and pathology using the classical words from "Huangd’ si Internal Classic" and "Classic on Medical problems".He quotes phrases from these two books to explain the physiology of women menstruation,as well as the mechanism of vaginal discharge.Lu Chu-bai develop his own view from the basis of the classical Chinese Medicine masterpiece and modified herb formula base on his experience.He modified 15 formula which he has successfully used to treat patients effectively.(2)Regulate Chi is the most important to regulate menstruation period.Lu Chu-bai believes it is very important to regulate Qi in order to regulate menstruation period.The rationale behind s that most illness are from the irregulation of Qi.Blood would follow Qi to move.So if Qi stop,blood would stop moving aound the body.Therefore,the normal movement of Qi needs to be treated.(3)Avoid to treat amenorrhoea by promoting menstruation.Diagnosis is required to check the pathology for different cases.Lu Chu-bai emphasizes we need to identify the cause of amenorrhoea which are mainly deficiency,heatness,sputum and Qi problems.We need to identify the root cause and decide the treatment plan rather than just promoting menstruation without checking the root cause.(4)Emphasis on pulse examination.Lu Chu-bai emphasize to have pulse examination to differentiate the type of the problems.For pregnancy,his interpretation of pulse pattern is different from "Huangd’ si Internal Classic(黄帝内经)" which is developed from his own practical experiences.(5)Strength to prescribe flower herb in the formula to treat gynecological illness.Lu Chu-bai reveals that the typical type of the body of women of Lingnan region is deficiency of Qi and Yin.He suggested that most herbs promoting the Qi in liver are too dry and injuring body fluid impairment.He has tried to use flower which could promote the Qi of liver without affecting the body fluid.The Frangipani is the mostly used flower herb to promote Qi in liver by Lu Chu-bai.(6)Emphasis on the health preservation.Lu Chu-bai emphasizes good living habits are important for the the smoothness of pregnancy.He introduces 10 aspects for the pregnant women to follow.They are diet habit,bowel habit,business affair habit,exercise,sleeping habit,spirit,outfits,body regulation,handover and breast protection.3.Lu Chu-bai developed his own prescriptions from the basis of the classical Chinese Medicine masterpiece.Lu Chu-bai is an expert on Gynecology and Pediatrics.The medical formula he listed in Lecture Notes on the Gynecology of Traditional Chinese Medicine is significantly affected by Fu Qing-zhu.These formulas are practically used and proved to be effective.Lu Chu-bai also developed his own prescriptions from the basis of the classical Chinese Medicine masterpiece from his experiences.These newly developed forumlas are valuable references for Chinese medicine practitioners.4.Comparison of Lu Chu-bai and other famous Lingnan gynecological physician in the same period.One of the famous Lingnan gynecological physician in the same period as Lu Chu-bai is Lu An-qing.He is in the same medical learning generation and he is also from He-shan area in Guangdong Province.His ancestor members are also pysicians.He is the society member of second year of Guangzhou medical society.He is famous on treating uterine bleeding,amenorrhoea,reverse menstruation,red and white vaginal secretion,pregnant vomit,threatened miscarriage,dizziness after labour and heart and stomache after labour.He is especially experienced in treating amenorrhoea.He suggested that most amenorrhoea patients are lack of blood,so it is not recommended to use medicine that is attacking the body.The "Lecture Notes on the Gynecology of Traditional Chinese Medicine"by Xie Ze-lin.Xie Ze-lin is from Nan-hai area.He studied in Guangdong Medicine Practical School since 1919.He started his clinical practice in Guangzhou after his graduation.He was hired by Guangdong Chinese Medicine Specialist School to edit the "Lecture Notes on the Gynecology of Traditional Chinese Medicine" as teaching material.He kept his clinical practice and teaching work and he was the panel of Guangzhou First Ren-min Hospital.He is the organizing committee of Guangzhou Chinese Medicine School which setup in 1956.His lecture notes systematically extracts the essence from the famous inherit from Fu Qing-zhu.Lu Chu-bai develops his own view from the basis of the classical Chinese Medicine masterpiece and share his views and modified herb formula,while Xie Ze-lin only quote from previous physicians which is a great reference for physicians.The lecture notes from Lu Chu-bai,Xie Ze-lin,Li Jin-sheng and Su Tian-gui are importantly composing the Gynecology of Lingnan area.
