Until now, some Tibetan Buddhistic and Taoist ancient architectures built during the last600years still reserve in the HeHuang River Basin which is located in the northwest of China,a lot of decorative paintings are found present on the wooden structures of these buildings,some of them have been created originally from the14thand15thcentury and maintenancerepainted partially during the16thto19thcentury, others even have been completely repaintedcurrently. These relics provide us a valuable material to research the regional decorativepaintings on the architectures. The purpose of this work is to research the architecturaldecorative paintings of HeHuang River region based on the view of the ethnic folk arts, andsupply reference materials for the conservation and maintenance of architectural heritage inthe future.The cultural anthropological fieldwork method was used to obtain the original materialsrelated to the architectural decorative paintings of HeHuang River region, and thecorresponding references were collected, except these achieved information,50singlebuildings distributed at nine different ancient building clusters which are located at HeHuangRiver Basin have been investigated by iconographical analyses method, the structure, patternand color were analyzed to understand the feature of the architectural decorative paintings,furthermore, the communication and exchange during their artistic formation were searchedusing the art stylistics method. The results show that the architectural decorative paintings ofHeHuang River region not only exhibit the official features of Ming and Qing dynasty, butalso merge the Tibetan patterns which show the strong influence from Tibetan Buddhism, as aresult, diversity with abundant historic and regional features has been developed in thesearchitectural decorative paintings. In the evolution of the architectural decorative paintings ofHeHuang River region, the decoration features from Tibet and the decorative paintings fromcentral China met each other, co-existed for a long time and integrated eventually. The architectural decorative paintings of HeHuang River region indicate the culturalintegration between Tibetan and Chinese which takes place from official to folk duringhistorical propagation, apparently, it is a witness of the integration between Tibetan andChinese. From these existence images it can be learned that the exchange and complementaryare necessary to promote and develop a culture. During the historic evolution, each ethnicgroup carries out its own ecological creation and eventually contributes to the diverse andunified Chinese cultural structures.
