In order to select the superabsorbent polymer with the best conservation capacity to the soil water and nitrogen, analysis was done to five popular kinds of super absorbent polymer (SAP). With adsorption experiment of entire combinations of the SAPs and two kinds of synergist, the best combination of materials was confirmed. According to the water and nitrogen need regulation of maize, applying analytic hierarchy process, results of the orthogonal test was estimated from the views of water and nitrogen conservation capacity and the economy characteristic. Thus, the best matching way of the materials and the material vital to each characteristic were invested. The mechanisms of the material in holding water and nitrogen were raised with the analysis of scanning electron microscope, energy spectrum analysis, and urease activity. Based on the study above, the best chosen material combination was applied into field experiment for testing and verifying. The effects and feasibility of the material combination was investigated from the view of water use efficiency, nitrogen use efficiency and as well as the economic benefit, aiming to provide technological supports to high use efficiency of water and fertilizer and the prevention and management of soil and water nitrogen pollution in arid and semi-arid region.
