From the point of Institutional Change Theory, the author studied thedevelopment history of contemporary China's TV sports news and dividedit into three phases. In phase one, TV sports news has became anindependent part. In phase two, the summit of it was the Asian Games of1990. In phase three, sports channels were founded. By analyzing thecharacteristics of the three phases, the author tried to answer thequestion of WHAT is the history of Chinese TV news. At the same time, the author studied the development model of TV sports news from thefollowing five perspectives: central and local, state-owned and privateowned foreign and national, cable and wireless, free and paid. The authorbrings forth a development model of Chinese sports TV news, one thatinvolves five major factors: policy, audience, competition, technologyand the specialist. These five factors join force and move the TV sportsnews forward. The part answers the question of WHY is so Chinese sportsTV news. The Preface centers on "TV Sports News" and "InstitutionalChanges", summarizing the research contents, explaining the researchpurpose and the research method used. The first chapter traced the firststage of China TV news development,in which practitioners have consciously put some news theories intopractice, and have thus made some achievements. Generally speaking, thepractitioners in this stage, however, had only superficial knowledgeabout the nature and functions of television as a mass medium, focusingmore on propaganda function of TV broadcasting, while neglecting or evenignoring the laws inherent in television broadcasting. With theestablishment of two professional sports channels by two local TVstations in 1985, TV sports have begun to be a new TV program formindependent from other programs. The second chapter reviews the second stage of China TV newsdevelopment. In 1989, China Central Television (CCTV) launched "SportsNews" in China, which was considered a great leap from quantity to qualityin TV sports news broadcasting. The Asian Games 1990 was the first andintegrated presentation of China sports TV news, which was the eruption of the power accumulated in the first stage and meanwhile laid thefoundation for its further development. Television was defined as thethird industry during the transitional period of Chinese society to themarket economy. Through some concrete news practices, TV practitionershave consciously and positively begun to pursuit larger space of personaldevelopment and they were quite fruitful. The third chapter looks at the third stage of China TV newsdevelopment. With the appearance of professional sports channel, TVsports news proves its vitality with rich fruits. The conglomeration andspecialization of China broadcasting system in 2001 witnessed its growingprocess in specialization. TV practitioners have gradually broughtseveral operational models. The winning of the bid to host the 2008Beijing Olympic Games boosted investment in TV stations. This caused newproblems to the sports channels. The fourth chapter observes China TV sports news from the fiveperspectives. From the perspective of CCTV and local TVs, two partiesare competitions and partners, which have more common benefits than itsown ones. From the perspective of state owned and private owned, thecapital of private companies or other social investors entering into thismarket could optimize the allocation of TV resources with theirinspiration and passion. From the perspective of foreign and domesticinvestors, foreign TV channels are an important player and a medium forthe Chinese TV sports news at this stage, for these foreign TV channelsare better equipped and own a better condition that can be used by theChina TV channels to broadcast overseas. Form the perspective of cableand wireless, both of them have their own characteristics in sportsprograms. From the perspective of paid TV and free TV, the governmentand industry departments shall actively involve all parties so as to meetthe diversified demands of the audiences. The fifth chapter probes into the current model of China TV sportsnews development. The author argues that whatever the policy is, theviewers, the sports events and technology are all only outer motivators, while the TV practitioners themselves are the crucial part to combineall above elements to exert the most power. Therefore, the author holds, the current China TV sports news development model is one with all-roundsupport from policy, viewer, sports event, technology and personalmotivation. The innovation of this dissertation is, summarizing and drawing uponthe historical development of China TV news history, it explores fromfive different perspectives the development of China sports TV news. The dissertation is weak on the comparison between China and foreignsports news. This is due to the fact that it is extremely difficultsearching and collecting the overseas sports TV news footages. The authorhopes to improve this in his later study.
