All radiology reports, either manual-reported, keyboard-reported, tape-reported or speech-recognition- system -based, use natural language. They can be narrative, non-constructive as natural language text. However, natural language can be so multi-semantic that it is hard to be analyzed, researched, sorted, summarized and retrieved, which is not of the benefit for scientific dada analysis, sharing and quality assessment. Therefore it becomes a must to some extent to construct and encode the data in radiology reports. The booming growth in computer, network and communication technology and the fast advancement in modern digital imaging equipment of medication, especially the extensive application of PACS based on DICOM standard technically ensure the scientific and standardized management of radiology reports. The Appendix 23 in 2000 DICOM3.0, with an amendment of structured report(later as SR), information object DefiTheenadvancement, advocates to organize radiology reports in the explicit frame of computer and meanwhile express medical concept with code so that computers can precisely understand and express the medical concept. The birth of DICOM SR makes it possible to manage the reports and images of different systems, to deal with the traditional reports and diagnose in the full use of radiology reports. The development and application of DICOM SR have become one of the hottest topics for the scholars overseas. Furthermore it has been proved that SR can minimize the ambiguity in traditional natural language reports and enhance the precision, perspicuity and the pragmaticism of clinical documents. Yet there still exist controversies and challenges in terms of customizing SR, setting up encoding database, noting key images and exchanging...
