As a famous expert of Qing Dynasty at study of Confucian classics, Chen Huan is especially known for his work on Mao Heng's Poems. His work Shi Maoshi Zhuanshu is regarded as the best of the three top researches into Mao Heng's Poems in Qing Dynasty. Chen Huan's study is not only well grounded but also well influential. His teachers include Jiang Yuan of Wuxian, Duan Yucai of Jintan and Wang Niansun and his son of Gaoyou, his friends Hu Peihui of Jixi, Hu Chenggong of Jingxian and Hao Yixing of Qixia, and students the famous arithmetician Li Shanlan of Qing Dynasty and present characters confucianist Dai Wang. In addition, Zhang Wenhu, Gong Zizheng, Wei Yuan and other scholars of his time are his friends. This thesis, on the basis of letters, biographies, prefaces, postscripts and other historical materials, concentrating on Chen Huan and his company through detailed investigation into Chen Huan's life story, his teachers and companions, aims at revealing the fact that scholars of the middle and later part of Qing Dynasty exchange their ideas to support each other in their academic activities by way of philological research to provide evidence for exploring academic development and evolution of the time.
