Epidemic influenza (abbreviated as flu) is an acute viral respiratory tract infectiousdisease caused by Influenza Virus (IV) that can severely impair human health. Therehave been several pandemics in history, bringing horrible nightmare to human being.Losses caused by flu deserve anything but ignoring. According to the report of AmericanNational Science and Technology Council, recently about 20,000 to 40,000 people die offlu annually in U.S. Influenza has been a viral infectious disease with high mortality rate.Expenses for preventing flu and labor loss due to flu amount to over 120 million dollarseach year. Flu is still an infectious disease, formidably threatening to human health andlife. This dissertation starts with several overviews about flu on the current epidemicresearches, progress in pathogenesis, advances of western medicine treatment, development of TCM theory and laboratory study on herbal anti-virus action. In the part of probing into the development of TCM theory, firstly, a new approachto understanding the characteristics of epidemic influenza's etiology and pathogenesis inthe northern region of China by my supervisor, Prof. Zhou Ping'an is illustrated.Epidemic influenza falls into the category of "seasonal epidemic cold" in TCM theory, one of exogenous febrile diseases. TCM has accumulated rich experiences in thediagnosis and treatment of exogenous febrile diseases, developing its own feature andpreponderance. Laying particular emphasis on macroscopy, TCM invariably attachesmuch importance to "coherence between human and nature" and uniform of externalcause and internal cause. It emphasizes diagnosis and treatment according to period, location and individual. Specific characteristics of epidemic influenza's etiology andpathogenesis in the northern region of China are formed because of its specialmeteorology, geology and living environment. By using TCM theory combined with hisprofound experiences, Prof. Zhou raises the statements that exogenous invasion of coldevil with internal accumulated heat toxin is the main cause of flu and that external coldwith internal heat is the basic pathogenesis. Secondly, treatment including prescriptionand herbs by Prof. Zhou is presented. Analysis of gan mao shuang jie he ji (compound oftwo-way dispelling cold). Considering the syndrome features of flu in the northern region,Prof. Zhou introduces the treatment principle: Expelling cold and clearing heat, tonifyingqi and dispelling toxin. So comes the gan mao shuang jie he ji for treating flu in thenorthern region. The entire formula is carefully formed with appropriate herbs. Herbs likeMa huang (Ephedra Herb) with the function of expelling cold and diaphoresis relievingsuperficies open the orifice for expelling evils out. Chai hu (Chinese Thorowax Root ) andhuang qin (Baical Skullcap Root)regulate qi dynamic to clear out the way for expelling evils.Huang qi (Mongolian Milkcetch Root) tonifies qi to help toxin and evil out. Sheng shi gao(Raw Gypsum) and ying hua (Honeysuckle Flower) clear heat and toxin to makeevils unable to stay in the body. All the herbs are with pungent taste havingdispersing effect and drving eveils away from upper jiao. The entire formula- VI - 感冒åŒè§£åˆå‰‚对æµæ„Ÿç—…毒感染å°é¼ å…ç–«æŸä¼¤ä¿®å¤æœºåˆ¶çš„ç ”ç©¶exemplifies the principle of "disperse" and also the concept of "treatment with syndromedifferentiation" of TCM. In the part of laboratory study, to aim directly at the immune pathologic condition caused byIV, we take immunologic injury and anti-immunologic injury as the index and observe gan maoshuang jie he jie's influence on the immunologic injury of IV FM1 infected mice.1. Death protection of gan mao shuang jie he jie on IV FM1 infected mice Effect of gan mao shuang jie he jie on IV infected mice are observed by observing the changeof IV infected mice's general condition (such as weight, activity and food-intake) and studying thedeath... |
