ObjectiveTo observe the clinical effectiveness of treating perimenopausal syndrome (PMS) with a combination of acupuncture and herbal medicine, and herbal medicine alone. We will discuss the effects of these methods on perimenopausal women's quality of life and reproductive endocrine and how to best treat their symptoms.MethodUsing clinical research standard methods, we randomly separated patients into two groups. One group received both herbal medicine and acupuncture treatments and the other group received only herbal medicine treatment. We will measure changes in the score of Kupperman Index, four life quality indicators and sex hormone levels before and after the treatment for each group.Results1.When we compared the effects of these methods on the Kupperman Index,, both methods obtain very similar results after the first month. However, the combination method showed better results after two months.2. We also compared the treatment effectiveness of these two groups on specific symptoms of the Kupperman Index. Both groups showed similar effectiveness on treatment of fatigue and urinary complaints. The combination treatment group had better treatment effects in insomnia, psychological irritation, musculoskeletal complaints and headaches (P<0.05). The combination treatment group also provided better improvement on paraesthesia and palpitations in the first month (P<0.05) but the difference was not seen after the second month. Similar results were seen in both groups in symptomatic treatment of sweating, hot flushes, dizziness, skin formication, and vaginal pain in the first month but combination treatment group had better results after two months (P<0.05)3. In summary, the combination method group had a success rate of92.8%verses75.1%success rate of the herbal medicine only group. The combination method clearly showed better results (P<0.05)4. Effects on MENQOL:Both methods were able to treat angiokinesis and physiological symptoms. The combination method group improved the vasomotoricity better than the herbal medicine only group. Furthermore, the combination method group showed psychological and sexual complaints improvement, while the herbal medicine only group did not.5. Before and after effects on reproductive endocrine:Both methods can increase E2level and decrease FSH/LH level. The combination method group had statistically better improvement on E2level when compared to the herbal medicine only group (P<0.05)ConclusionThe combination method treated patients with Perimenopausal Symptoms with a success rate of92.8%, which is better than treating with herbal medicine alone. The combination method can treat MENQOL's symptoms of angiokinesis and promote physical, psychological, and sexual symptoms improvement. The combination method also increased E2levels and decreased FSH/LH levels more than treatment with herbal medicine alone. Overall, the combination method was able to provide better quality of life improvement to patients than treatment with only herbal medicine alone.
