Part 1: 40 patients were divided into elderly group and younger group Concentrations of serum albumin, prealbumin, growth hormone , insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and sense of fatigue were measured. In elderly group, serum GH and IGF-1 levels were significantly lower, nutritional conditions were poorer, and the postoperative fatigue was more severely. Postoperative Christensen score were negatively related to the growth hormone level on the first day after surgery.Part 2: 24 aged rats were divided randomly into control group and GH group, 10 minute's myocardium ischemia followed by 7 day's reperfusion was performed in all groups. The rats in GH group were treated with subcutaneous injection of GH 0. 5 U/ kg per day for 7 days and the seventh injection began at preoperation. Apoptotic index (AI) was obviously higher in control group;myocardium dyed intensity of IGF-1 was higher in GH group, cardiac function was better in GH group.Part 3: 40 elderly patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery were divided into two groups, They were injected with rhGH or placbo for 7 days. Albumin, prealbumin and IGF-1 were significantly higher in GH group postoperatively .The level of fatigue was lower in GH group No differences were found with echocardiography pre and postoperatively, 6-minute walk distance were higher in GH group. Conclusion: perioperatively administration of growth hormone improves the recovery of elderly patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery.
