A Study On City Park Systerm

City Park System(CPS) is not only an important component of urban green space and recreation system,but also a critical factor for improving urban environment.The CPS serves multiple purposes such as recreation,scientific education,artistic cultivation and environmental ecology.The scientific and rational distribution of CPS in a city is an important measure of the contemporary human habitat environment.However,limited research have been conducted regarding theorization about CPS in China and its practical applications.In particular,we need updated and coherent theoretical frameworks to elaborate on different concepts and models.In practice accordingly,the planning and construction of CPS in China is preliminary,far behind the need of urban development.In June of 2007,the National Development and Reform Commission ratified the project of setting up "experimental districts for urban-rural coordinated reform" in Chengdu and in Chongqing.One of the main goals of these experiments is to realize the "harmonious development between human and nature" and to "ensure that people live and work in a healthy ecological environment." "Coordinated urban-rural planning" is not an enclosure movement in which the city expanded to rural areas unboundedly;instead it includes a harmonious development between urban and rural green space.Therefore,research on the CPS in Chengdu is important both theoretically and empirically.It responds to the national policy of building new socialist village as well as feeds urban citizens' recreational needs of "getting closer to the nature".Engaging with literature on urban recreational activities,landscape architecture, landscape ecology,urban disaster prevention and coordinated urban-rural planning,this dissertation argues that a "Metropolitan City Park System" that highlights coordinated planning for urban and anal green space should be implemented in Chengdu.Specifically it is integrated and managed various networks for the new park system that exist in the non-construction land within the planned district.Drawing upon analysis of categorization system,internal mechanism(management scheme),and strategies of coordinated planning and construction,this dissertation proposes an effective and manageable city park system which is propitious to achieve the goal of coordinated urban-rural planning in Chengdu.This research breaks into new grounds in several ways.First,in the dissertation,it is defined the concept of CPS,which extends the existing categories of the city park system. Second,based on The Standards for Classification of Urban Green Space,this research creates a new system for classifying city parks and addresses the contents,functions and construction standards for different types of parks.Third,this research summarizes and defines five types of urban and suburban landscape.In addition,this research points out the direction for the development of suburban parks in Chengdu and the accordant themes and recreational types,including building a park highlighting ecological civilization in the north,a recreational and athletic park in the south,an ecological park exhibiting flowers and fruits in the east,and an ecological park featuring garden plants in the west.Finally,drawing upon detailed analysis of the status quo of the city parks,this research lays out a framework and a model of arrangement for planning and restructuring the city park system in Chengdu that correspondent to the policy of coordinated urban-rural planning.
