Since the late 1990s,the ecomuseum theory has been put into practice for heritage protection in rural villages in Southwest China, which has shown some tensions between preservation and development.Beginning with the classification and interpretation of essential landscape factors and their value orientations, this study analyzes the functional transformation process of landscapes in rural villages.Through case studies of the ecomuseum,it provides an analysis of the dialectical relationship between protection practices and landscape changes from a diachronic perspective. This study has revealed that (1) unfixed and semifixed—feature elements of landscape are more mature than fixed—feature elements in rural villages in southwest China, because of its unique culture; (2) Ecomuseum theory can influence the pace, direction and scale of tourism transition of rural villages; (3) the ecomuseum has different degrees of impact to the changes of individual landscape elements, with the semi-fixed feature the strongest, and the fixed-feature elements the weakest. Finally, this study proposes a framework of reference on the heritage protection of rural villages, and explores ways to promote the sustainable development of ecomuseum in China.
