Viscous damping wall is a new type of viscous dampers which recently be used for its flexible distribution, large damping force and notable energy-dissipating effect. Viscous damping wall was first developed in Japan, but its application in china still has a long way to go for the lack of research in this area. Overall and systematical experimental research and theoretical analysis on the viscous damping wall and frame structure with it are made in the paper. Therefore basic researches are made on the theoretic theory and practical application. The main conclusions are as follows:Research and tests on viscous damping materials and their performances are made at first on the chemical stability, security and durability of the materials. Dynamic performances of the materials are also tested using Advanced Rheometric Extended System Test. By comparing the differences of the materials, a new kind of material with better performance is developed.Test results show the new type of viscous damping material developed has following advantages with larger energy-dissipating capacity, larger damping force and stable performance and lower price. At the same time, it is first developed in china.VDW model is made with the developed viscous damping material. And the experiments are made on the dynamic performances of VDW. Relations between the dynamic performance and the temperatures, frequencies, and displacements are discussed. A new formula to calculate the damping force is developed according to the test results, in which both the viscous elasticity restore force and the frequency are firstly considered at the same time. The formula proposed is more reasonable and accurate.Three models of steel frame with VDW are made for the experiments on the seismic performance and characteristics of carrying loads. Tests are made under lateral dynamic loads to compare the different hysteresis curves, breakage form, and bearing characteristics for the steel frames with and without viscous damping walls.Test results are as following:1) The energy-dissipating capacity and the damping force of the structures with VDW are greatly increased.
