Designing mathematics homework plays a key role in promoting educational reform, paying attention to individual differences, and improving teaching accuracy. As a qualitative evaluation method characterized by grade description,SOLO Classification Theory can make the level of thinking ability shown by each student in the process of solving problems visible and measurable, and has certain potential advantages in the design of primary school mathematics homework. Therefore, the design of primary school mathematics homework under the SOLO Classification Theory is a topic worth exploring.Based on the literature review, the research questions are:(1)How to formulate an effective primary school math homework design strategy according to the characteristics of SOLO Classification Theory?(2)How to test the quality of primary school mathematics SOLO assignments?Through a literature analysis of SOLO Classification Theory and assignment design,an attempt was made to classify the SOLO classification thinking hierarchy based on the structure of observable learning outcomes proposed by Biggs and Collis,as well as to identify assignment design as an activity in which teachers choose to reorganize, adapt and improve or independently develop students’ after-school assignments for a specific teaching content based on curriculum standards, teaching objectives, etc.,and considering students’ learning situations. At the same time, the process, strategy and evaluation of homework design are discussed, and the match between SOLO Classification Theory and primary school mathematics homework design is discussed in depth.Based on this combing and analysis, the SOLO homework design process and homework design strategies are then proposed, and the SOLO homework design in different lesson types, such as new mathematics lessons, exercise lessons and review lessons,is explained in detail with case studies. Then, according to the SOLO homework design strategy, the SOLO homework exercises in the review course of Representing Numbers with Letters in the fifth grade of the Peoples Education Press were designed, and the corresponding SOLO homework evaluation standards were formulated using the Delphi method. Finally, students in two fifth grade classes were selected to receive homework tests, coded student work results and conducted scoring reliability tests to detect the quality of SOLO homework exercises and analyze student work through the Guttman scalegram analysis.Combining the characteristics and case analysis of SOLO homework design,on the one hand, the SOLO homework design suggestions are obtained: basic analysis, determine the homework goal;build a hierarchical framework according to the textbook;use resources skillfully, develop homework question types;the results are measurable, organize the homework content;based on levels, formulate evaluation methods. On the other hand,it is concluded that the application of SOLO Classification Theory to the design of primary school mathematics homework has certain advantages and limitations. The advantages lie in: scientific testing, helping to improve homework;effective evaluation, reflecting the quality of learning;hierarchical division, showing the differences in answers. The limitations are: the scope of application of the topic is limited;the influence of teachers’ subjective consciousness.
