Faculty’s professoriate evaluation and promotion in higher education field mainly aims to assess teachers’ teaching effectiveness,research capability as well as the quality of their academic output.By analyzing the evaluation and promotion mechanism as well as relevant practice of faculty’s professoriate in Harvard University,and based on China’s status quo,we could gain some meaningful and effective experience so as to further enhance the evaluation and promotion system of faculty’s professoriate for Chinese universities and colleges.Based on literature analysis method,case study and historical research perspective,this paper summarizes the main contents of the evaluation and promotion system of faculty’s professoriate in Harvard University,especially in Harvard Medical School,including its historical evolution,principles and requirements,specific standards as well as evaluation procedures.By detailed analysis,Harvard University’s faculty professoriate evaluation and promotion system presents the following characteristics: adhering to values of democracy,fairness and academic-targeted evaluation mode;attaching to periodicity and discontinuity;offering sustained support from external experts and organizations.And no less important,it attaches great importance to Harvard faculty’s academic career development,with a set of standardized review procedures.However,it is noticeable that there are still some problems,such as the candidates have to face various academic pressure and challenges in a high degree.By means of comparative research method,this paper also sorts out the current status,features and problems regarding to the faculty’s professoriate evaluation and promotion system in China’s higher education field such as formalized and limited evaluation methods as well as instrumental rationality.Furthermore,the evaluation standards are much about quantitative indicators,which is unreasonable.And the administrative management also needs to be improved.Therefore,the following recommendations could be adopted to tackle these problems.Firstly,improving the value orientation of instrumental rationality;secondly,the evaluation standards should be modified and the quantitative evaluation perspective should be used rationally.Thirdly,the evaluation methods and procedures are advised to be diversified.Lastly,the faculty evaluation management mechanism is supposed to be further reformed.
