| National image refers to people’s overall views and understandings of certain countries in terms of politics,economy,culture,and diplomacy.The national image plays a decisive role in communication and cooperation among countries.A positive national image will promote international collaboration,while a negative national image will harm international relationship.In recent years,with increasing international impact,China is playing a leading role in the international community,attracting attention from foreign media.Malaysia is an important country in the Belt and Road Initiative,and there is broad room for cooperation between China and Malaysia.Since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic,China has attached global attention in pandemic prevention and control.There are plenty of Malaysian media reports on China in virus prevention,through which we will have a better understanding of Malaysia’s opinions on China and facilitate amicable communication between the two countries.Since ecological linguistics was introduced to China by researchers,plenty of Chinese scholars have put forward different paradigms for ecological discourse analysis.Based on the discourse’s compliance with the international ecological view of “diversified harmony and mutual benefit”,He Wei and Wei Rong put forward three types of international ecological discourse: ambivalent international ecological discourse,beneficial international ecological discourse as well destructive international ecological discourse.Moreover,according to He Wei and Wei Rong transitivity system in systematic-functional linguistics can be a theoretical basis for international ecological discourse analysis,and in the context of international ecology discourse participants of different transitivity processes impose distinct impacts on international ecology.Based on the research framework put forward by He Wei and Wei Rong,the thesis made an international ecological discourse analysis of Malaysian media’s report of China’s Covid-19 vaccine from two perspectives: transitivity system and international ecological discourse.It is revealed that in Malaysian media participants in China’s Covid-19 vaccine reports include the Chinese government,Chinese company,and other participants like Chinese official and Chinese scientist.China’s national image is influenced by these discourse participants through participants’ actions,personal perceptions,as well as transitivity processes in Malaysian media.In relevant reports,China’s national image is multi-dimensional,involving domains such as politics,economy,virus prevention and control,technology,and international cooperation.The general image of China in Malaysian media can be concluded as follows: 1.China takes actions to maintain and preserve a peaceful domestic environment and,in the meanwhile,enlarge cooperation with other countries in economy and virus prevention and control.2.China encourages development in technology,especially in medical technology and China masters advanced medical technology.3.China takes active action to perform its duty as a responsible major country.4.China is criticized as a destroyer of international cooperation for pandemic prevention.The general image of China in Malaysian media is positive,which conforms to reality.But the negative image of China is not in conformation with reality,which is a reflection of Malaysian media’s stigmatization of China.Despite Malaysian media’s stigmatizing report on China,the overall image of China in Malaysian media is positive,revealing that Malaysia is willing to make a cooperation with China.There is vast space for Malaysia and China in various areas.The Covid-19 pandemic inflicted a far-reaching influence on countries around the world,and during the joint efforts to battle with the pandemic distance among countries has been narrowed,and understanding among countries has been improved.Under this situation,China should be more active in deepening multi-faceted collaboration with Malaysia for joint development and progress. |
