| The original text of this translation report is extracted from the fifth chapter of the book The Myth of the Model Minority,“Struggle and Conformity”.This book reveals the oppression brought by racial discrimination in the daily life faced by Asian Americans. The theme of Chapter 5 is “Asian Americans’ struggle and conformity to the white racial framework”.It is intended to show the readers the penetration of the white racial framework in Asian Americans through a large number of real cases and analyses, and how Asian Americans use the defensive strategies of “struggle” and“conformity” to fight against the oppressed reality. The translator chooses this chapter as the original text of the translation report, hoping that through her translation, target readers will better understand the defensive psychological state of Asian Americans facing racial discrimination, and also proves the guiding role of hermeneutics in translation practice. In 1975,George Steiner published the book After Babel: Aspects of Language and Translation, which introduced hermeneutics into translation studies, and divided it into four steps---“trust”,“aggression”,“incorporation” and “compensation”.Based on George Steiner’s hermeneutic translation theory, this report analyzes the application of these four steps in translation practice from the lexical, syntactic and textual levels by selecting typical translation examples in “Struggle and Conformity”.The translator hopes that this translation report will provide some insights and reference for other translation practitioners. |
