A Report On E-C Translation Of Excerpts From The Digital Prism:Transparency And Managed Visibilities In A Datafied World

It is an era of digital transformation,and digitalization is integrated into various fields.This has absolutely changed every aspect of social life.Therefore,it is necessary to find out reasonable measures for information and data management.The author selected Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 from the book the Digital Prism:Transparency and Managed Visibilities in a Datafied World,an informative text of science and technology,as her English-Chinese translation practice.The book provides a new perspective on the datafied world and a new method of information and data management.In order to successfully complete the translation task,the author adopted Peter Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation theory as the guiding theories.This report explores specific translation methods in terms of vocabulary and long sentences.For vocabulary,this thesis focuses on terminology,personal names and demonstrative pronouns.For the translation of terminology,the author used literal translation and annotation,ensuring the accurate delivery of professional information.For the translation of personal names,the background information of the person was first extensively researched and then the name was translated in view of its features with specific techniques,mainly following common practice and authoritative practice as well as transliteration,trying to achieve accuracy.For the translation of demonstratives,the author used omission and restoration.For the translation of long sentences,their structures were first parsed,the primary and secondary relations of different parts were clarified and the internal logic was analyzed so as to understand the content and significance of each sentence component;then combined with their characteristics,the sentences were translated in various ways,chiefly through the sequential method,the explanation method and the comprehensive method.It is hoped that the information in the original text has been accurately transmitted and that this translation practice would provide some reference for the translation of the same text type.
