A Report On Escort Interpreting Around Two Buddhist Temples In Mianyang From The Perspective Of Schema Theory

The report is written based on one Buddhism-related escort interpreting project that the author participated.During the activity,the author,as an escort interpreter,provided services for three foreign clients who came to visit Buddhist temples in Mianyang,Sichuan province.The key research objects of the report are the interpreting of temples-related information and Buddhist culture-loaded words.Some interpreting skills and coping strategies had been analyzed and summarized by retrospecting and rethinking profoundly.Guided by schema theory,this report aims to explore some common interpreting solutions when “linguistic schema,content schema and formal schema” are applied to escort interpreting related to Buddhist culture.The report found that schema theory has great value and significance in this escort project.Based on the complicated work environment,flexible use of language and highly professional content of escort interpreting,the author first formed a project-related corpus and became familiar with the accents of the corresponding clients,so as to accurately understand and process the input language.Then parallel texts of similar items had been used to construct formal schema for understanding the structure and combination of such genre,so as to output appropriate target language.At the same time,the construction of content schema,namely,the familiarity of the clients and their cultural background,helped the author to avoid ambiguity caused by cultural differences.Under the guidance of schema theory,the whole project was processed smoothly with the use of interpreting skills.In addition,this thesis has practical significance for the research and development of schema theory applied to tourist escort interpreting and interpreting about Buddhist culture.The author hopes that this project can provide some references for interpreters who conduct similar activities.
