This paper presents a spatial study of the frescoes of the Fahai Temple during the Ming dynasty, using the frescoes of the three great masters of the temple as an example. The study focuses on the author’s understanding of spatial structure and composition in the creative expression of mural painting, investigating the spatial expression of water and land paintings at the palace in Beijing as well as at folk monasteries and temples,in order to propose the structural features of space and the laws of composition and layout that constitute its narrative function.A detailed examination of the spatial form of expression characteristic of the scrolls and murals of the palace temples of the same period is presented. The analysis in this paper shows that Ming dynasty Buddhist temple murals share the same expressive approach to the spatial expression of indigenous water and land paintings, with Tibetan Buddhism incorporating the traditional visual compositional structure of Han Chinese figure painting, reflecting the expansion of Ming dynasty temple wall paintings in terms of spatial expression.
