Nowadays, artificial intelligence has become a new representative of the scientific and technological revolution and has entered people’s lives with an irresistible trend. The Revolution of Artificial Intelligence:Past,Present and Future written by Wang Tianyi is a rare masterpiece in the field of AI in China. This book was published by Beijing Times Chinese Publishing House in 2017.Once published,it has been highly praised by the majority of AI enthusiasts. It has become an introductory popular science bibliography to understand the development of artificial intelligence.Skopos theory has three rules:skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule.As the primary rule, skopos rule requires translators to choose translation strategies according to the cultural background of target readers and the communicative purpose of target texts. Therefore, skopos theory is often used to guide the translation of practical and purposeful applied texts. The Revolution of Artificial Intelligence:Past,Present and Future,as a popular science text in scientific and technological texts, its applied stylistic features enables it to be translated and studied under the guidance of skopos theory.By comprehensively considering the three rules of skopos theory, the translator can choose appropriate translation methods to realize the stylistic function of popular science texts. This Chinese-English translation selects Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 of the book as translation materials, which mainly discuss the revolution of human cognition of data and the application of machines. They are key parts of the whole book. This translation practice report is divided into five parts,of which Chapter 4 is the core.In this chapter, the translator analyzes key points and difficulties of translation from vocabulary, syntax and rhetoric according to features of the source text and the three rules of skopos theory. In terms of vocabulary, the translator mainly uses skopos rule and coherence rule to realize the popular science purpose and communication purpose of the target text through domestication translation;at the syntactic level, the translator combines skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule, and mainly adopts linear translation, conversion and amplification to make the translation smooth and accurate;for the translation of rhetorical devices, the translator takes skopos rule as the core and adopts literal translation and free translation to restore the sentimental color of the source text as much as possible. In short, for the translation of scientific and technological texts, especially popular science texts,we should consider not only the translation features of scientific and technological texts, but also the translation features of literary texts.According to different translation purposes, appropriate translation strategies should be adopted flexibly.
