Mao Zedong’s "Speech at the San’a Symposium on Literature and Art" published in May 1942 is an important theoretical document that creatively combines the basic principles of Marxism with the practice of Chinese revolutionary literature and art.Under the current era background of building a culturally powerful country as one of the strategic goals before 2035,this paper tries to restore the context and philosophical basis of the speech,sort out and study the four key issues of the speech,including the people-centered position in the speech,the methods of struggle in literary criticism,the ways to go to the masses and the form of expression of mass discourse,and then develop a profound understanding of the contemporary value and significance of the "Speech",which is conducive to providing important guidelines for solidly promoting the construction of a socialist cultural power,and constantly exploring new frontier of the Sinicization of Marxist literary theory."Speech" was born in this context that,under the background that the Chinese nation came to the dilemma of surviving and death,the Communist Party of China leading by Mao Zedong overcame countless obstacles and entered San’a to seek a way out of the crisis and find out the destiny of the nation and started cultural construction in San’a,Northern Shaanxi.In his "Speech",Mao Zedong expounded a set of fundamentally literary and artistic issues such as the relationship between literature and art and the masses,the relationship between literature and art and revolution,the relationship between literature and art and life,the relationship between literature and art workers and the masses of workers,peasants and soldiers,and the relationship between literature and art and China’s excellent traditional culture.Mao Zedong creatively used historical materialism as the theoretical basis to establish a new development model of literature and art in which revolutionary literature and art serve the masses of workers,peasants,soldiers and politics.Using the Marxist views about history and aesthetics to solve the problem of literary criticism,Mao clearly put forward the methods and standards of literary criticism.The creative usage of dialectical materialism to solve the problems of literature and art and life,the proposed method of literature and art work to the masses aims to give full play to the educational function of literature and art to improve the theoretical literacy of Marxism inside and outside the party.Proposing the creation method of literature and art expressed in mass language requires literature and art workers to pay attention to grasping the unique geographical advantages of San’a and the unique characteristics of northern Shaanxi,and to carry out the transformation of the colloquialization of literature and art works.Through the inheritance and development of the traditional Chinese culture,the reference and study of foreign cultures,and the transcendence of the old forms of traditional folk art,the innovation of the form of literary and artistic creation has been triggered.In order to prevent the contemporary development direction of the literary and artistic incompatible with the new era,this paper aims to explore the way to grasp the contemporary value of "Speech",adhere to the guiding position of Marxism in the field of ideology,correctly lead the development of socialist literature and art with Chinese characteristics,tell the story of China in the new era well,and let Chinese culture shine in the starry sky of world civilization.
