Content-based Instruction,which can be abbreviated to CBI,is a kind of second language teaching concept that has emerged in the West since the 1980 s.The concept advocates that foreign language teaching should be based on the subject content,which aims to make sure learners can acquire language ability through real corpus.CBI has several teaching modes.Theme mode is one of the most widely used in the field of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.In this model,teachers select authentic corpus and organize teaching around a topic or theme.In view of the low enthusiasm of foreign students in the elementary spoken Chinese class,the inab ility to express in segments,and the difficulty in reproducing the learned knowledge,this study attempts to adopt the teaching method of CBI theme mode in the teaching of elementary spoken Chinese class,and carries out teaching activities with foreign students in China who are above the elementary level as the teaching objects,hoping to improve students’ interest in communicating in Chinese,activate the classroom atmosphere,and help students master oral vocabulary and sentence structures while exerc ising students’ oral ability,so as to improve the students’ Chinese level.The paper finds out the theoretical basis for the application of CBI theme model to elementary spoken Chinese class.On the basis,it analyzes the feasib ility of applying this model to elementary spoken Chinese class from the perspectives of the current situation and characteristics of elementary oral Chinese class and the applicability of CBI theme model to elementary oral Chinese class.After analyzing the teaching objects and teaching materials,the author chose "tourism" as the theme for teaching design and carried out teaching practice in the elementary oral Chinese class,aiming to enab le students to acquire corresponding language ab ilities through teachers’ teaching language and classroom activities around the theme of tourism.After the practice,the author got feedback from students and other teachers by means of questionnaires and interviews.Combined with the feedback and the evaluation after the practice and at the end of the semester,the author summarizes and reflects on the practice of this semester from the aspects of theme selection,corpus organization,evaluation methods and standards formulation,and puts forward some suggestions on the implementation of the teaching method of CBI theme mode in elementary oral classes from the perspective of three teaching elements.
