English reading teaching in senior high school has a great significance to the improvement of students’ reading comprehensive ability and thinking quality.The newly revised National English Curriculum Standards for General Senior High School(2017)(hereinafter referred to as The New Curriculum Standards)puts higher requests and more tasks on senior high school students’ English reading learning.In English class,reading teaching should not only teach the basic language contents to students but also cultivate students’ good learning habits and high-order thinking abilities,which requires teachers to explore new teaching methods to help students improve English reading ability.KWL model was firstly proposed by Donna Ogle in 1986 to stimulate students’ reading interest and background knowledge about learning topics before class reading.The letters in the name,KWL,are abbreviations for Know,Want to know,and Learned.These three letters cover the whole reading process from before-reading to after-reading.The philosophy behind the KWL reading model is in congruence with the requirements of the New Curriculum Standards.This study aims to explore the following two research questions: 1.Can the KWL model improve student’s English reading ability? 2.Can the KWL model stimulate students’ interest in English reading?In order to verify the two questions,two parallel classes in senior one in Affiliated Middle School of Taiyuan Normal University are selected as research subjects for a 12-week teaching experiment.Class F2201 is the experimental class where the KWL reading model is used for reading teaching;Class F2202 is the control class in which traditional reading teaching model is used in English reading teaching.Based on the requirements of research design,test and questionnaire are selected to collect the research data,and SPSS19.0 is used to analyze the data.According to the research results,the following conclusions are drawn:1.The KWL reading model can improve students’ English reading ability.Based on the results of the pre-test,the two classes were at same level in terms of their reading ability before the experiment.In the post-test,the reading scores of the experimental class were improved significantly compared with the control class,indicating that the KWL reading model can effectively improve students’ reading ability.2.The KWL reading model can improve students’ interest in English reading.Before the experiment,there is no significant difference between the experimental class and the control class in students’ English reading interest.After the experiment,the scores of the post-questionnaire in the experimental class is much higher than that of the control class.And the English reading interest of the students in experimental class was significantly improved,which demonstrated that the KWL reading model is a good way to attract students’ attention and motivate students’ reading interest.According to the research results,the author puts forward corresponding teaching implications for senior high school English reading teaching.Furthermore,some suggestions are offered for future studies based on the limitations of this study.
