| Jinling Shisan Chai is a masterpiece of novels written by Chinese-American writer Yan Geling, who won the 12 th Hundred Flowers Award in China. The Flowers of War,the English version of Jinling Shisan Chai,is popular in English-speaking countries, and reviews show that most overseas readers are attracted by its unique literary style. However, few scholars have paid attention to translation studies on the literary style of The Flowers of War.Therefore,it is necessary to investigate the style reproduction in The Flowers of War and the translation strategies and methods adopted by the translator,so as to provide reference for style reproduction of Chinese literature works, improve the translation of Chinese literature and help Chinese literature go global.Liu Miqing’s Stylistic Markers Theory provides scientific theoretical guidance for translation studies of literary style, which can be used to recognize and analyse the style of literary works,to evaluate the pros and cons of style reproduction, but also to explore the corresponding translation strategies and methods and provide inspiration for translation practice. In view of this, the research is carried out from the perspective of Liu Miqing’s Stylistic Markers Theory, comparing Jinling Shisan Chai with its English version The Flowers of War,to explore stylistic reproduction of Jinling Shisan Chai.It is demonstrated that the English version of the novel reproduces the style of the original text to some extent. The translator Harman flexibly adopts domestication and foreignization. She uses corresponding code for the content that can correspond to that in the target language;when the target language lacks stylistic markers corresponding to that of the source language, such as phonological markers, recasting code is adopted;for insurmountable language barriers and cultural barriers, such as idioms and allusion, the translator employs recasting code and decolouring code.Of course, there are some shortcomings in the translation, the translator deletes some content of the original text to adapt to the target reader’s habits.Overall, the translator has successfully realized stylistic reproduction of the original work. The research once again confirms the applicability and explanatory power of the Stylistic Markers Theory. It also enlightens that the translator should not only to consider the original style, but also to adapt the style of the work to the target context in literary translation practice,so as to improve the translation in terms of stylistic reproduction. |
