"Little Sisters of the Grassland" is the first large-scale pipa concerto with a traditional instrument, the pipa,as the main instrument, and a Western orchestra, composed by Wu Zuqiang,Wang Yanqiao and Liu Dehai in 1972.The whole piece is based on Mongolian musical elements, and through five parts it represents the moving story of Longmei and Yurong who fought against the snowstorm and successfully protected their flock, creating their image as national heroes. The work has a high research value in terms of composition structure, performance techniques and other aspects, and is highly infectious and widely acclaimed by domestic and international audiences. This article analyses and explores the heroic portrayal of the Little Sisters of the Grassland in three sections. The first part introduces the background and characteristics of the composition, providing a basis for the study of the portrayal and performance of the Little Sisters of the Grassland. The second part focuses on the portrayal of the heroic image of the work, analysing and explaining it in terms of both the authenticity of the subject matter and the title of the music. The third part is the focus of the paper, and focuses on the performance techniques, including the grasp of tempo and intensity, the transformation of timbre, the collaboration with the piano and the sense of performance,in an attempt to explore the art of performance of the work in a comprehensive manner and hopefully provide a new way of thinking for the study of the heroic theme.
