Teacher feedback refers to the teacher’s evaluation and response based on students’ language use and expression in the class,which is an important part of the teacher’s discourse.In the dual context of the normalization of the epidemic and the low age of Chinese language learning,it is necessary to study the feedback discourse of novice teachers of Indonesian children in online international Chinese class.Through classroom observations,questionnaires and interviews,we investigated and analyzed the use of feedback by four novice teachers at Zhejiang University of Science and Technology in terms of the teachers’ use of feedback and the attitudes of Indonesian children and novice teachers toward the feedback.The study found that the effectiveness of different types of feedback varied,with negative feedback effectively promoting children’s output of the target language but positive feedback playing an effective role in mobilizing children’s emotions;the strengths of novice teachers’ use of feedback were their strong sense of feedback,their ability to actively affirm and encourage students,and their awareness of learning and enthusiasm for teaching;The weaknesses of novice teachers’ feedback use were their lack of theoretical knowledge,incomplete lesson preparation,inappropriate feedback discourse,lack of variation in feedback methods,inaccurate timing of feedback,and inability to fully meet children’s needs in terms of feedback types.The following suggestions were made in response to the findings: from the level of teachers’ use of feedback,we suggest that they should make reasonable preconceptions about feedback,use appropriate feedback discourse,grasp the right time to give feedback,pay attention to various feedback methods and pay attention to children’s emotions and attitudes;at the level of teachers’ feedback cultivation and training,we suggest the curriculum of universities and the training of Chinese teachers sent by the Language Cooperation Center.A study on the feedback language of novice teachers in Indonesian children’s online international Chinese class can both complement the research on children’s online international Chinese teaching and enrich the research on teachers’ feedback language in international Chinese class,which can help improve the teaching effectiveness of novice teachers and promote students’ Chinese language learning.
