The town of Jedishou in Lhoka(Shannan),Tibet, was an important commercial town in old Tibet, named "Tue" in the Tubo period. In the 14 th century, during the Paldruk period,Jadesu developed into a full-fledged commercial town.Jedishou town belongs to Lhoka(Shannan),the birthplace of the Tubo dynasty und is located in the Yarlung Zangpo River valley of the U-Tsang region, which is the mainstream cultural zone of Tibet;its architecture maintains its pure regional characteristics and is classic Tibetan architecture. Its residential buildings and traditional neighborhoods can give people "sense of age" or "sense of history",and can remind many locals of the original appearance of Barkhor Street in Lhasa during the old Tibetan period.Based on the current research on Tibetan residential architecture, this paper examines the residential architecture of Jedishou town, which has been neglected.Through in-depth field research and mapping, combined with local oral histories and existing literature and research methods on Tibetan history,Tibetan studies, residential architecture, and architectural typology, this paper investigates three themes: the types and characteristics of residential architecture in the core area of Jedishou town, the reasons for their formation, and conservation and renewal.Firstly, this paper compares the history of Jedishou town from many historical documents and oral histories. Then, the general layout and spatial structure of Jedishou town are introduced, the street profile and morphological composition of its traditional neighborhoods, the location of important public buildings and public spaces, the spatial form of building clusters, and the interaction between buildings and streets in terms of morphology are analyzed. After that, this paper selects the key residential examples for mapping and research, records the current situation of local residential buildings and neighborhoods;studies the local residential building types and describes their characteristics;elucidates their characteristics from their living habits and cultural traditions;and reasonably speculates on the characteristics of local old Tibetan aristocratic houses and sorts out the historical evolution of local residential buildings.Through the lens of side-by-side comparison, the traditional neighborhood and residential architecture of Jedishou town are roughly compared with those of Barkhor Street in Lhasa and the old street of Jyary Gyup in Gyantse, and it is found that it has its own characteristics and is better preserved in some aspects while following the classic pattern and style of the U-Tsang region. On this basis, the causes of the current characteristics are analyzed from the perspectives of historical evolution and regional characteristics, and the reasons for the "sense of age" or "sense of history" of the local residential architecture and traditional neighborhoods are also explained. Finally, this paper discusses the conservation and renewal of local residential buildings and traditional neighborhoods and proposes corresponding suggestions. This paper provides basic information for the renewal and preservation of local residential architecture and traditional neighborhoods, and for further research.
