| With the proposal and implementation of the "the Belt and Road" initiative,China has strengthened economic exchanges with countries along the Belt and Road. The scale, regions and fields of investment in countries along the Belt and Road have been expanding, effectively promoting the economic development of countries. In 2022,China further proposed to jointly build the "the Belt and Road" green development and build a community of human and natural life.As the initiator, participant and leader of the "the Belt and Road" initiative,China should take the initiative to assume the responsibility of a major country. In the process of promoting its own green economy transformation,China should also pay attention to the environmental conditions of countries along the Belt and Road to achieve the sharing of development achievements. For this purpose, this paper uses the panel data of China’s foreign direct investment and the economic and social development of countries along the the Belt and Road from 2010 to 2020 to empirically analyze the environmental effects of China’s OFDI on countries along the the Belt and Road, using the spatial error model with fixed time and space. The results show that:(1)China’s investment in countries along the "the Belt and Road" has reduced carbon dioxide emissions, which is consistent with the "pollution halo" hypothesis;(2)The relationship between economic growth and environmental pollution of the countries along the line shows a rise, then a decline, and then a rise, which conforms to the characteristics of the environmental Kuznets curve;(3)After classifying the countries along the line according to different standards, the results of sub-sample regression analysis are basically consistent with the benchmark regression results.China’s investment in the countries along the line is clean and there is no obvious difference. Finally, the following suggestions are put forward:(1)Strengthen multilateral cooperation and exchange and practice the concept of green development;(2)Optimize the structure of investment in China and promote high-quality economic development;(3)Deepen green and clean energy cooperation and promote green and low-carbon transformation and development. |
