In recent years,global climate change has posed a severe test to people’s lives and development.As the inhabitants and guardians of the planet,citizens are both responsible for climate change and key to achieving the goal of carbon neutrality for all.Nowadays,the experience economy is prevalent,sophisticated internet technology is available,and citizens are increasingly aware of environmental protection.Carbon footprint calculator apps are gaining attention as one of the effective tools for low-carbon environmental protection.However,most of the carbon calculator apps in China have few user groups,poor experience,insufficient user motivation,and low user stickiness.In this context,it is necessary to improve and innovate the design methods and theories related to carbon calculator applications.The purpose of this paper is to investigate how to keep users’ willingness to participate in the application from the perspective of emotional design and to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality for all people.This paper follows the principle of combining theory and practice.The study is carried out from both theoretical basis and practical operation.Firstly,through the explanation of the relationship between carbon footprint,citizens and Carbon Calculator App,the analysis of emotional design theory,and the current situation of emotional experience of Carbon Calculator App users,the value and necessity of emotional design of Carbon Calculator App are summarized.Secondly,through semi-structured interviews and questionnaires,we studied the emotional design factors of Carbon Calculator App and identified the positive emotional elements and weights that affect users.In addition,according to the attributes of the carbon calculator app and the user’s operating habits,the user’s emotional experience stages were categorized into the perception stage,the use stage and the continuous influence stage,and the design strategies were proposed according to each stage as practical guidelines for the design construction.Finally,the "Save the Penguin" application was created based on the research theory.Therefore,the core research results of this paper are based on the design concept of emotional design,the characteristics of carbon calculators,user influencing factors,and design strategies.
