Balanced systems are widely used in many fields. For a balanced system performing a specific mission, the mission should be aborted when the system is at a high risk of failing. In recent years, the problem of optimal mission abort policy for balanced systems has gradually become one of the research hot spots in the field of reliability engineering. The reliability and optimal mission abort policy of balanced systems are studied in this dissertation. The main contents are as follows:Firstly, the reliability modeling and analysis of the multi-state balanced system are studied. The system running in the shock environment is considered, the reliability model of the system is built, and the condition of the system to keep balanced is that the maximum state difference of the components is less than a given threshold.Components are failed due to degradation failure or external shocks.Reliability indices such as the system availability are derived by using the Markov process imbedding approach. The availability of the model is illustrated by using numerical examples.Secondly, the optimal mission abort policy for a multi-state balanced system is discussed. The competitive abort criteria are considered according to the competitive risk of the multi-state balanced system.Reliability indices such as the mission success probability are derived by using the Markov process imbedding approach, and two optimization models are established to maximize the mission success probability and minimize the system maintenance cost. The availability of the model is illustrated by using numerical examples.Thirdly, reliability modeling and analysis for the balanced system with a restricted mechanism are discussed. The reliability model is established for the balanced system with a restricted mechanism. When a component in a sector fails due to degradation failure or external shocks, the system will keep balance by forcing down a working component or resuming a forced-down component. And assume that there is a probability to resume the forced-down component.Reliability indices such as the system availability are derived by using the Markov process imbedding approach. The availability of the model is illustrated by using numerical examples.Fourthly, the optimal mission abort policy for the balanced system with a restricted mechanism is discussed. Two competitive abort criteria are considered for the balanced system with a restricted mechanism.Reliability indices such as the system survivability are derived by using the Markov process imbedding approach, and two optimization models are established to maximize the mission success probability and minimize the system maintenance cost. The availability of the model is illustrated by using numerical examples. This dissertation not only expands the application research of balanced systems but also provides important theoretical support for the stable operation of balanced systems.
